Daily Trust OnlineFriday, August 31, 2018Why I want to be president – Saraki"Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday formally declared his intention to run for the office of president of Nigeria on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Saraki said during a dialogue with some Nigerian youths and young aspirants in Abuja that he has all it takes to preside over the affairs of Nigeria, especially with current challenges bedevilling the country.
“Up and down our country today, Nigerians are crying out for succour. Many of our children are hungry. Many people are dying of avoidable or otherwise treatable diseases. Many have fallen below basic living standards, and are now among the 87 million that sealed Nigeria’s position as the country with the highest number of people in extreme poverty.
“Our young people lack opportunities. The necessary education facilities and system to equip them for the future simply do not exist. We are not creating the jobs needed to usefully engage them in order to grow our economy. And too often, the youth feel shut out, prevented from having any say in the direction of this nation.
“The harsh conditions of extreme poverty faced by the people, fuel the state of insecurity all over the country. Hunger, lack of education and lack of opportunities push many Nigerians into criminal activities including terrorism."

Daily Trust OnlineTuesday August 28, 2018Lagos PDP chairman defects to APC"The chairman, Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Moshood Adegoke Salvador, has announced his defection from the party to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state.
Salvador, who was surrounded by hundreds of his supporters at his house in Surulere, Lagos yesterday, said already 15,000 members of the party had appended their signatures to follow him to the APC.
The PDP chairman, who had just been released from detention over allegation of being culpable in the death of the PDP Apapa Local Government Area (LGA) chairman, Prince Adeniyi Aborishade, lamented that for three weeks his ordeal lasted in detention, he neither received calls nor visitations from the PDP leaders in the state and the national levels.
He attributed his ordeals to the former PDP Deputy National Chairman, South, Chief Olabode George, saying he had been going around to tarnish his image and that of his family. He also said when he was detained, he handed over the party to his deputy and the copy of the letter he wrote is with the national office.
“Today, I received a phone call from the Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees (BoT). Later, I received a call from Prince Uche Secondus. These are people who never called me for once or asked about my wellbeing during my travails. But they were now calling asking why I wanted to dump the party,” Salvador said. "

Turaki said he was eminently qualified to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, stressing that Nigeria needs not only an experienced and a well-educated candidate but also a bridge builder who does not have controversial character.
He said such a candidate must not be known to have taken advantage of the system when he was given the opportunity to serve.

Daily Trust OnlineTuesday August 28, 2018Mikati: PDP should correct its past mistakes before next elections"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been advised to correct its past mistakes and ensure that they are not repeated in the next general elections.
Alhaji Shuaibu Idris (aka Mikati), who is a governorship aspirant in Kaduna State on the PDP platform, gave the advice while speaking with our correspondent. Idris, who is a former Deputy Managing Director of Dangote Flour Mills Plc and the Group Head of Public Sector at Liberty Bank Plc, said he would take Kaduna State to greater heights if he became governor of the state.
“As students of history, we must learn from past mistakes. I am sure every one of us still has those issues very fresh in our minds. A situation where a senior member of a party comes out to say the party will rule for 60 years posits some level of arrogance and grandstanding. “Where is the will of the people? Where is the place of God in this kind of statement? Again, when a senior member of a party claims that there is no vacancy in a position that is supposed to be contested by aspirants before the selection of the best and people’s choice, entails imposition and clear disregard to democratic principles. Daily Trust OnlineTuesday August 28, 2018PDP cannot challenge Buhari to debate on good governance – APC"The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) lacks the moral right to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari to a debate on good governance.
The party made this known in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Yekini Nabena, on Monday in Abuja, describing the challenge by the PDP as laughable and incredible.
The PDP had recently challenged Buhari to a debate on good governance ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The APC said that as a party synonymous with impunity, institutionalised corruption, non-remittance of 20 billion dollars oil revenue, among others, the PDP was not in a position to debate on good governance.
“A party whose administration placed the economy on life-support through its voodoo economics and fiscal recklessness, the PDP cannot be in a position to debate on good governance.

I don’t need money to beat Atiku, others for PDP ticket – Makarfi
A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has dismissed the role of money in the race for the party’s presidential ticket.
He told newsmen yesterday in Lagos, that even party members concurred he is the best man, among a dozen aspirants, fit for the job and that he does not need to give them money to get their votes.
Among the aspirants are former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Sokoto, Attahiru Bafarawa, former Kano governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Gombe governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo. Senate President Bukola Saraki has been on a national tour, ‘consulting’ to join the race.
Makarfi said contrary to certain opinions, money would not determine who picks the PDP ticket, and that money has never been a determinant in who becomes the president of Nigeria.
“When did Nigeria start to produce presidents because of resources? Former presidents Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Dr Goodluck Jonathan and now President Muhammadu Buhari, did not become presidents based on money.
“In one of the Southwest states I visited, a member said other aspirants have been giving them money and gifts, but I don’t have to give them money or gifts to vote for me in the primaries because they know I am the best man for the job,” he said."

“When former governor Mbakwe was there, what you call Independent Power plants today were started by Mbakwe. He built three power plants in the three senatorial districts. He built shoe factories, paint industries, poultry, general hospitals in Local government areas and many others but unfortunately, all those things Mbakwe built have all collapsed.
“In Imo today there is no transport system, everything has collapsed. So, the challenge of leadership in Imo is enormous and I’m passionate about it. "

ThisDaylive OnlineMonday August 27, 2018APGA Decries Alleged Political Intolerance by Abia Govt"The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has cried out over alleged intimidation by the state government and its agents, saying the opposition party has been subjected to series of attacks and disruption of its political activities.
State chairman of APGA, Rev Augustine Ehiemere, raised the alarm at the weekend during a press conference in Aba to denounce the “senseless acts of terror sponsored by Abia State Government and directed at APGA supporters and her governorship aspirant, Dr. Alex Otti.”
He specifically stated that APGA and its leader, Otti, have been banned by the state government from holding any political activities in Obingwa Local Government Area, where the State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, hails from, and therefore considered ‘a no-go-area’ for the opposition party.
While recounting several “politically motivated acts of terror directed at APGA and Otti in Obingwa Local Government Area, Ehiemere said the most recent event occurred on August 21, 2018, when a rally organised by APGA at the premises of the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN) was scuttled by the Chairman of Obingwa council area, Hon Hanson Amaechi."

Daily Trust OnlineMonday August 27, 20182019: Atiku denies dumping PDP for another party"Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied media reports indicating he has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for another political party in order to actualize his presidential bid.
Atiku, in a statement yesterday by his campaign office, said he remained a front-line contender for the presidential tick of the PDP, describing the report as a malicious attempt to confuse the public about his aspiration ahead of the forthcoming primaries.
“The campaign office of former Vice President of Nigeria Atiku Abubakar debunks the story from a section of the media that frontline presidential aspirant for the 2019 election, Atiku, has defected from the PDP.
“In the past two months, Atiku Abubakar has moved across states in the country consulting with stakeholders of the PDP and explaining to them his agenda encapsulated in the acronym JOBS (Jobs, Opportunity, Being united and Security) for Nigeria. The nationwide consultations continue this week with visits to the South West, North West and North Central zones of the country. “Atiku’s passion and commitment to winning the PDP primaries is without any compromise and to assume that he will abandon the hard work he has done with the positive results he is getting from the stakeholders of the party is to say the least preposterous and unthinkable. Daily Trust OnlineFriday, August 24, 2018No court judgement stopping Imo LG polls – ISIEC boss"The chairman of Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Ethelbert Ibebuchi, has said he is not aware of any court order stopping the electoral body.
Rather, he said, what he was aware of was that former chairmen and councillors were in court claiming their entitlements from the state government.
Ibebuchi, who spoke to newsmen on the commission’s preparedness for Saturday’s local government election, said the electoral body would require 8000 ad hoc staff to conduct the election in 3,523 polling units in a total of 44 voting points.
According to him, about 14 political parties would be participating in the election out of the 22 parties, whose primaries it supervised, stressing that others could not participate because they probably lacked the capacity.
He said the ISIEC followed due process in preparing for the election, adding that the commission will provide a level playing ground for all the participating political parties.
However, the names of the political parties he reeled out did not include the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other parties with strong showing in Imo. "

Oloriegbe, who said this during an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, added that the people of the ancient town had lost their Islamic value and heritage.
He said Kwara State as a whole and Ilorin in particular has not had leaders who understood its value and heritage in the last 15 years.
“Ilorin used to be a hard working environment in the past. But everything has changed in the last 15 years as a result of lack of meaningful development in the society. Kwara State is ranked number five in terms of revenue generation in Nigeria. But there is nothing to show for the revenue being generated.
“I am not contesting to get money because I have worked within and outside Nigeria in the last 30 years and I have what can sustain me comfortably. But I am leaving my comfort zone to go to uncomfortable zone of politics for the sake of my people,” Oloriegbe said.

Daily Trust OnlineThursday, August 23, 2018N/Assembly to interrupt recess for election budgetThe leaders of the National Assembly have agreed to reconvene before September 25 to consider and approve the budget for the 2019 general elections, Daily Trust has learnt.
However, it was gathered, the senators and members of the House of Representatives will only sit for a day and go back to continue with their annual recess, which they commenced on July 24.
Sources told Daily Trust yesterday that although the National Assembly leadership has agreed to reconvene for the budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the 2019 elections, there is no definite date yet for reconvening.
The Senate and the House committees overseeing INEC are expected to harmonise their positions on the elections budget on Monday and present same to the appropriations committees for further action, after which both chambers could reconvene.
“There’s no definite date yet, and I don’t think it will be next week‎ because I should be in the know. All I know is that we’ve agreed to reconvene and consider the election budget. What I can’t tell you now is the actual date.
“What they want to do is to just reconvene and do everything within one day and go back for us to continue with the recess. You know the issue of impeachment is there, so nobody wants to take chances,” a source said last night.
Asked about the possibility of the two chambers having a joint sitting to consider and approve the elections fund, the source said “it is not part of our rules”.

He spoke in Enugu during the presentation of performance report of 2017 federal capital budget and southeast region.
Some non-governmental organisations as Hope Givers Initiative, Christian Aid, Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn, organised the forum as part of efforts to make governance work for the people.

ThisDaylive OnlineThursday, August 23, 2018INEC Plans to Release Unclaimed PVCs to Osun APC, PDP Alleges- THISDAY NEWSPAPER.The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has concluded plans to release unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The opposition party in a statement issued in Osogbo, Osun State capital, by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, said some unnamed influential members of APC have found accomplices in INEC with whom agreement had been reached to release the PVCs.
Odeyemi argued that APC is sponsoring an unpopular candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, hence the growing desperation by the party to foist him on the people of the state through every means possible except ballot.
He added that the activities of some INEC officials are been closely monitored since intelligence at the disposal of PDP confirmed unholy alliances between APC and some bigwigs within the electoral body in the state.
Odeyemi further alleged that some people called ‘APC agents’ have been combing several towns considered to be stronghold of PDP in the state, buying PVCs from unsuspecting voters in order to reduce the voting strength of the opposition party.

President of NYCN, Bello Bala Shagari, yesterday, in Abuja, said it was unfortunate that a number of hired people gathered in Rivers State in the name of the council to create disharmony and confusion among Nigerian youths for cheap political and personal gains at the expense of the youths.
Shagari stated that “... most of those who have gathered to conduct the illegal exercise which they refer to as a congress in Rivers State are not members of the council and are mostly overaged men who think they can hold Nigerian youths to ransom because they don’t like a new young leadership that emerged in the Gombe elective congress which was overseen by the Ministry for Youth and Sports Development. Daily Trust OnlineWednesday, August 8, 2018Shehu Sani: Kaduna APC ward writes state chairThe Ward 6 exco of the APC in Kaduna Central Senatorial District has written the State chairman of the party over alleged lifting of suspension on Senator Shehu Sani.
A statement purported to be from the Ward 6 last week said the suspension on Sen. Sani had been lifted.
The Ward Chairman of the Ward 6, Ibrahim Salisu Togo, said in the letter that he was officially reporting an attempted case of factionalisation of the ward, adding that he had reasons to believe that the letterhead on which the lifting of the suspension was written was forged.
Togo stated that the statement lifting the suspension bore the name of one Abbas Muhammad Anni as Ward 6 chairman and 17 others purporting to be the exco of the ward. Therefore, he urged the state exco to investigate the report and take necessary action to uphold party discipline and apply the provisions of the APC Constitution.

The Guardian.ngWednesday, August 8, 2018Secondus asks UK to expel BuhariNational Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has reacted to the siege that prevented members of staff and lawmakers from accessing the National Assembly.
He asked the United Kingdom (UK) to expel President Muhammadu Buhari, who he said, was hiding in that country to plan an assault on Nigeria’s democracy, adding that Britain should not allow anyone to turn that country into a haven of anti-democracy conspirators. Secondus pointed out that President Buhari left the country to UK for a 10-day medical leave to enable their plans against democracy to be executed in his absence. He alleged that the final plan for the invasion of National Assembly was sealed when the Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, visited the President in London at the weekend.
According to him, the siege at the National Assembly left no one in doubt that President Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are out to destroy the country’s hard earned democracy because they can no longer fit properly into it.

Saraki who recently defected from APC to PDP has been under fire by the APC to vacate his position as Senate President. Dogara on the other side is yet to renounce his membership of the APC, but has also been accused of anti-party activities against the APC.
Both lawmakers alleged that Tuesday morning invasion of the Assembly complex by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) was an attempt by the executive and APC lawmakers to reposition leadership of the National Assembly.
“To reconvene, there is a process which has to be followed. Also, it should be clear that these Senators who are camped somewhere know the procedure for changing the leadership of the Senate,” said Saraki and Dogara in a joint statement.

Daily Trust OnlineMonday August 6, 2018Saraki’s case different from Tambuwal’s 2011 saga — Lai MohammedThe Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the scenario which brought in Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the seventh National Assembly against the wish of the then ruling party is different from the way Dr. Bukola Saraki emerged as Senate president in 2015.
Tambuwal, who is now the Governor of Sokoto State, it would be recalled, emerged Speaker of the Lower House, against the zoning principle of the then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which favoured the former House Leader, Mulikat Adeola-Akande as Speaker.
With the support of the then opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Tambuwal emerged as speaker. He later in 2014 dumped the PDP for the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Guardian.ngMonday August 6, 2018Kashamu’s expulsion versus peace prospects in Ogun PDPThere were strong indications that the recent expulsion of Senator Buruji Kashamu, representing Ogun East senatorial district in the Senate, would bring to an end the protracted crisis bedeviling Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It all began about a decade ago, when the former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, failed to install his successor in the 2011 gubernatorial poll based on which faction had the upper hand in the party structure.
The fact that there were four factions of the party worsened the confusion.
Kashamu, Daniel, former Speaker House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole and Oladipupo Adebutu, all had a splinter of Ogun PDP.

Daily Trust OnlineMonday August 6, 2018Why Kano deputy governor resignedThe deputy governor of Kano State, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, has resigned from his position as deputy governor over alleged disrespect and injustice meted on him by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Prof Abubakar, in his resignation letter, dated August 5, 2018, said it took effect from Saturday, August 4, 2018.
In the letter, the former deputy governor said the decision was taken due to irreconcilable differences on matters relating to governance and government operations.
He added that his advice to the governor had been reciprocated with persecution and injustices meted on him, and that he endured “immeasurable and unjustifiable humiliation” for over two and a half years on issues of governance and the desire to keep government on track.
The letter read in part: “Your Excellency would recall several instances I had to draw your attention to the need to understand and approach the differences in order to avoid drifting into the kind of unnecessary crisis we are facing today, but to no avail.

A source said the governor was considering a good strategy to neutralise the political crisis in Kano Central over senatorial slot.
It would be recalled that both Gawuna and Kamkarofi were among the politicians aspiring for the senatorial seat in 2019.

Following the defection of the Senate president to PDP alongside other senators, there have been calls for the resignation of Saraki having left the APC, on which platform he emerged senator and eventually Senate president.

It comes after a federal high court had sought to stop the National Assembly from over-riding the assent of the presidency on a bill to amend election sequence.
A statement by Saraki’s special media and publicity adviser Yusuph Olaniyonu said the judgement makes clear that the National Assembly was right when it passed the bill stating the sequence of elections and that the legislature reversed its decision on the issue, after President Mohammadu Buhari refused assent to the bill, in the interest of peace and to forestall any legal obstacle on the way of the 2019 elections.
"I have always believed in the need to test our laws in court by seeking judicial interpretations on contentious issues. He said that legitimate political choices and movements, including cross-carpeting, were part of a democratic enterprise.

The party, in statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Salisu Tanko Wusono, said Hunkuyi was seeking refuge in empty boasts because the process of his retirement from politics would be concluded in 2019.
The APC said Hunkuyi should have known that boastfulness could not take the place of political substance.
“Hunkuyi boasted in 2003 that he will defeat the incumbent governor. He failed, only to hurry back to the PDP as soon as he was defeated to the surprise of the APP that had given him its governorship ticket.
“Hunkuyi failed in every election until the APC gave him its ticket to contest the senatorial election in 2015. This should have prompted some humility and gratitude that the APC had made him electable. But Hunkuyi preferred to delude himself that he made the APC victorious,” Wusono said.
