Daily Trust OnlineFriday, June 1, 20182019 Election: Reps kick against use of electronic voting The House of Representatives, on Thursday, rejected the use of electronic voting system in the forthcoming 2019 General Elections.
The rejection was sequel to a bill, which seeks to amend the provisions of the Electoral Act, considered by the Committee of the Whole.
The lawmakers, however, approved the use of smart card readers for accreditation before elections are conducted in any polling unit across the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Bill for an Act to Amend the Provisions of the Electoral Act, No. 6, 2010 to further improve the Electoral Process and for Related Matters has 41 clauses.
The lawmakers, in their submission, removed the amendment in the bill which seeks to introduce the use of electronic voting into the Electoral Act.
They resolved that while an electronic instrument; the card reader, will be used only for accreditation, the voting will be strictly done manually.
During the consideration, Rep Chinda Ogundu (Rivers-PDP) had sought to add a new amendment that the election in any polling unit should be suspended if the card reader malfunctioned until another functional card reader is brought.

ThisDaylive OnlineFriday, June 1, 2018APGA: We Rejected Okorocha Because He’s Worse Than Prodigal SonThe National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Oye, has said his party rejected Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s move to rejoin the party because his moves were not sincere.
Oye who spoke to a select journalists yesterday in his country home, Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, affirmed that as a Christian who is very familiar with the story of the prodigal son, who returned to his father after squandering his wealth, Okorocha’s case is worse, as he was still unrepentant.
Okorocha, who won his governorship election on the platform of APGA in 2011, dumped the party, leaving with some of its members to the then newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recently, news of Okorocha’s overture towards APGA surfaced, as he was said to have approached the party leaders with the hope of actualising his dream of crowning his son in-law as governor of the state.
But Oye speaking with journalists denied that any money was collected from Okorocha to bring him back to the party.
He said: “An Igbo proverb says a man who refused to join a ship can not say he was chased away from the ship. Okorocha chased himself away from the APGA ship, and I can tell you that he can never be a member of the party again."

The Guardian.ngWednesday, May 30, 20182019 will provide a defining moment for Nigeria, says OsobaIt is not possible for us, or Nigeria, to of 100 percent successful in our expectations when the struggle for the restoration for democracy was being fought. When the struggle was on, we did not foresee a situation where the economy of the country would be under this terrible, clinical weather. As an optimist I have a firm hope that we have at least for once, fended off military incursion into the governance of this great nation.
We managed the transition from a civilian-to-civilian government in 2007. Another landmark in which I see as part of the success is that President Goodluck Jonathan conceded victory voluntarily in 2015. That singular act has helped to stabilise our civilian rule. The fact is 2019 is going to be a defining year. My strong advice is that all the elite should re-enact the June 12 1993 scenario. There is a golden opportunity for that to happen because the amendment to the Electoral Act that is now in contention is the strongest weapon ever that is going to make for a clean, clear respected election.

The senator representing Abia South sounded the note of warning while addressing members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at a rally in Obingwa Local Government Area during the visit of the state working committee, saying: “At this moment, Nigeria is at the crossroads.”

ThisDaylive OnlineThursday, May 31, 2018PDP: Debt Remains Only Legacy Fayemi Left for Ekiti People"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has alleged that the only legacy traceable to former governor Kayode Fayemi and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the July 14governorship election was the humongous and burdensome debt his government left as a burden to the Ekiti populace.
The party alleged that the debt under Fayemi was burdensome to the point that the state would have to be paying as much as N1 billion monthly till 2036, calling on Ekiti people to resist any attempt by Fayemi to stage a comeback and start pillaging the state’s commonwealth.
The PDP also described as senseless the statement made by the APC
castigating former President Goodluck Jonathan for his plaudits for the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, over the construction of the 1.3km flyover in Ado Ekiti.
In a statement by the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Mr Jackson Adebayo, PDP said it was so disheartening that the APC has no credible legacy left during Fayemi’s reign, adding that, that accounted for the derisive defeat he suffered to Fayose in the June 21, 2014 poll.
Adebayo said: “How can the APC members and leaders in Ekiti appreciate good thing since God has deprived them the knowledge, wisdom and understanding to do good?
“It is not only ridiculous, but insensitive on the part of the APC leaders to condemn the construction of legacy projects such as the new Governor’s Office, the flyover, the High court and the King’s Market, among others. If they suffer from dementia, the good people of Ekiti do not and can compare and contrast their years of locust with what
we have now."

ThisDaylive OnlineThursday, May 31, 2018Babalola: Time to Return to the Basics"I congratulate every Nigerian on the occasion of yet another ‘Democracy Day’, a day set aside to celebrate the return to civil rule after decades under military rule. As is customary, there will be parades across all the states and at the Federal Capital Territory to mark this special day, speeches upon speeches will be made and much effort will also be made to analyse and celebrate the ‘gains’ made since the return to democratic rule. However, while I share in the joy of the day, I am yet forced to recall a statement which I made in 2011 on the occasion of the celebration of the nation’s 51st independence anniversary. At that time I stated as follows:
…it surely cannot be denied that what is required at this time of our National life is indeed deep and sober reflections on the part of those saddled with the administration of the affairs of the country, on the social, political and economic fortunes of our country. The occasion of the 51st anniversary to my mind should be used not to celebrate whatever gains it is felt Nigeria has achieved in the period between 1960 and today but rather should be devoted to a reflection on what could have, but was unfortunately not achieved. As Abraham Lincoln stated, a towering genius does not celebrate the ordinary. Such a person disdains paths already beaten by others. He seeks areas of endeavour yet unexplored and conquers them. The focus should be on what have we missed or got wrong as a Nation?"

“We have come to the conclusion that fragmenting a ruling political party into fractions at this material time is injurious, self-serving and the promoters should only be seen as agents of destabilization but fifth columnists.
“We may need to refresh ourselves that the antics of the nPDP members is to demonize our great party and make it less in value before Nigerians.
“It is part of their plot to de-market the party while they are seeking alternatives.

Wednesday, May 30, 2018Wednesday, May 30, 2018Disquiet in APC as govs differ over moves to reshuffle national officersAhead of the June 23 national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), some governors and other powerful forces within the party have differed over plans to replace some national officers of the party.
Daily Trust gathered from credible sources that some APC governors and some key stakeholders wanted their “men” elected into some key offices in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party during next month’s national convention of the party; a development which other governors and notable personalities were said to be not favourably disposed to.
It was gathered that interest groups are now taking the scheming in the APC to the next level, considering that the debate over the fate of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has settled, with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole seen as the national chairman of the party in waiting.
The APC has fixed June 23 for its national convention where various offices would be filled even as interests have heightened in various quarters as to who becomes what. Working hard to install NWC of ruling parties gives unfettered advantages to king makers, analysts say.

TheGuardian Newpaper/ The Guardian.ngMonday, May 28, 2018Violence, imposition of candidates threaten Gombe APCIf there is any state in the north where the All Progressives Congress (APC) needs to forge unity of purpose and practice inclusive politics, it is Gombe State. The state is not very special for the forthcoming 2019 electoral battle basically because of two issues. In the first place, it is currently the only state in the north that withstood the Buhari Tsunami of 2015. Furthermore, the incumbent Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, has not only been praised for his stellar track record of achievements and good governance, but he is also associated with the 2019 presidential poll. Also, over and above the records of achievements of his administration, Governor Dankwambo has raised Gombe as an oasis of peace, security and development. With those obvious positive indicators, it is therefore worrisome that as the main opposition party in the state, APC had not learnt lessons from its defeat at what appeared a soft contest in 2015, but has continued to gamble with fate. Available indicators and recent reports show that two issues that could pin APC down in the state in the forthcoming general election are recourse to violent tendencies caused by politics of exclusion and obvious attempts at imposition of candidates against the choice of the people. Opara, who spoke at the weekend in Abuja, said defeating President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 could be a difficult task but added that it would require the personality and clout of someone like Kwankwaso to accomplish.
The NUP chairman, who said Kwankwaso could be trusted with power, voiced his conviction that the former governor would make a difference if he made the right decision in choosing the party to run on and picking the right vice presidential candidate.
“Buhari has a cult-like followership in the far North while Senator Kwankwaso has the strongest political movement that cuts across the nation. If Kwankwaso decides to run for the presidency in 2019 on the NUP platform, and if he decides to take his vice presidential candidate from the South, particularly a devout Christian, humble, popular and young, he will win the 2019 presidential election.

The party counseled the litigants seeking Fayemi’s disqualification to stop their “wasteful move,” saying the issue had long been settled by the Supreme Court that only a court of law can stop a candidate from contesting.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former governor of Nasarawa State, stated this in reaction to accusation of marginalization made by former acting chairman of the nPDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje.
The nPDP was a breakaway faction of the then ruling party, the PDP, that teamed up with three other parties to form the APC and then went ahead to win the 2015 elections.
Baraje and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola in their petition to the APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, demanded a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari within seven days to address their grievances.
Baraje neither picked his calls nor responded to a text message by Daily Trust.

Kano lawmakers insist on removing speaker
Members of the Kano State House of Assembly have insisted on removing the Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf Ata and other principal officers of the house. The move was truncated yesterday when heavily armed policemen, civil defence and DSS operatives blocked entrances to the assembly complex, thereby making it difficult for members to have access to the facility to perfect the impeachment.
The spokesman of the aggrieved lawmakers, Alhaji Baffa Babba Dan-Agenda, who confirmed the move to Daily Trust, said 21 out of the 40 members in the house had signed in support of the impeachment of the speaker and the entire principal officers of the house.

Ikubese who spoke at a press conference in Akure on Monday, said he was quitting NCP because the party had derailed from the vision of its founder, late Gani Fawehinmi. According to him, the National Chairman, Yunusa Tanko and the National Secretary, Ayodele Akele, unilaterally imposed levies on aspirants contrary to the provisions of the party’s constitution alleging that it was aimed at thwarting his aspiration.
Ikubese, who joined the party on September 16, 2017, disclosed that the duo drafted a document mandating presidential aspirants that are less than two years in the party to pay N7.04m.
This, he said was in contravention to the tradition “laid down by Chief Gani Fawehinmi that party members who seek to run for offices should do so at no cost, as a populist party, to encourage the masses to participate actively in politics. "
