ThisDaylive OnlineMonday, May 6, 2019‘Severance Package for Federal Legislators Amounts to Abuse of Office -Victor Abasiakan-EkimNigeria is one of the pocket countries in the entire world where the legislators prescribe, approve and pay to themselves extraordinary and ridiculous amount of monies as salaries and allowances. The allowances range from the inane to the profane. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) imbues the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission as the statutory body with the responsibility of fixing salaries and related allowances of persons in the service of the government of the federation. However, in total disregard to the latent provisions of the constitution, our federal lawmakers have legislated on and approved jumbo salaries for themselves without recourse to the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission. This bothers on greed, pursuit self-glorification and aggrandizement. The conduct does not take into consideration the plight of the masses and should be deprecated by all and sundry. There is no legal and moral justification for the betrayal of the trust reposed by the people in the legislature. But interestingly, the pressure kept mounting on daily basis and the reasons they gave were not the kind of reasons that can be brushed aside. We have the Standing Order and that book is where the rules for the conduct of our day-to-day businesses are taken from. Order 2, if you check, specifically mentions that in electing the presiding officers – the Speaker and Deputy Speaker – voting shall be, where ‘shall’ means mandatory, by electronic voting or secret. Punch NewspaperTeusday, May 28, 2019We shouldn’t have a repeat of 2019 polls —JonathanFORMER President Goodluck Jonathan has said the country should modify its electoral laws to avoid a repeat of the 2019 polls in 2023.
He also said an individual shouldn’t have the power to appoint all members of the election tribunals.
Jonathan, who said these during a lecture/book presentation to mark the second term inauguration of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt on Monday, added that allowing one person to constitute the tribunals would erode confidence in the system.
He said, “The judicial process where one person constitutes all the election tribunals to hear petitions is not right. It is difficult in a democracy for somebody to be extremely neutral.
“In one way or the other, somebody close to you will be in one party or the other. The only way to be above is to make sure that one person does not have the power to constitute tribunals to listen to all cases.”
“The parliamentarians who have won elections to go the National Assembly should take a look at what happened in the 2019 elections. We must modify our laws to make sure that in the 2023 elections, some of these things don’t repeat,” The Cable quoted Jonathan as saying.

He also bemoaned the growing rate of insecurity in the country. “I, and perhaps many of us, might have made one mistake or another and caused offence among ourselves these four years.
