Tribune News Online Monday, 26th May 2014 Ekiti 2014: As Traditional Rulers Mediate In Political Violence The build-up to the June 21 governorship election witnessed what many observers in the state termed a frightening dimension following the intrusion of bitter violence among the rival political parties jostling for votes in the election. The spate of political violence and the fear it had created among the people prompted traditional rulers in the state to call a meeting of the candidates of the 18 political parties INEC had listed on the ballot. The intervention of the monarchs became imperative because of the height the violence was gradually attaining and the tone of its perpetrators. The perpetrators became so audacious that they no longer did it clandestinely but dared even the security agencies in their nefarious deeds. Campaign rallies became events to be abhorred for fear of political thugs, while the acts took its toll on the overall image of the state. Ekiti 2014; Violence http://www.tribune.

The Nation Online Tuesday, 13th May 2014 2015 Elections: Competence Or Sympathy President Goodluck Jonathan deserved our sympathy to climb to the Presidency in 2010, after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua. That was understandable, considering the bad-testing cookies from the staple of the late President’s kitchen cabinet, shortly before his death. Again, in 2011, the tale that Jonathan was a shoeless boy from a minority national, in Nigeria, sold like a hot pancake. That again was understandable, as he represented a David, staking against the Goliaths. But as 2015 approaches, I canvass that competency instead of sympathy should be our common guide, in our country’s best interest. Nigeria 2015; President Goodluck Jonathan http://thenationonlineng.

He said, It is unfortunate that elements within the presidency have been [involved in] efforts to try to link everything with 2015. That is one of the major reasons why the Boko Haram problem has become intractable and has defied all attempts at a solution – simply because it is like somebody who is supposed to face west and he’s facing east. All Africa News Online Tuesday, May 6th 2014 Nigeria 2015: Our Women On The March Again To achieve that ahead of the 2015 general elections, the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, convened a two-day National Dialogue on Enhancing Women’s Participation in the 2015 Elections titled: Dialogue Between Women Leaders and Chairmen of Political Parties on Enhancing Women’s Candidature in the 2015 Elections. After the 2011 elections, it was generally believed that the proportion of women in politics fell. The female outing in that exercise, was so low that only thirty two women were elected to the National Parliament out of four hundred and sixty nine members, which was barely 8% representation. For gender activists and political analysts, that represented a major setback for the efforts at enhancing womenparticipation in the democratisation participation in the democratisation process. Hence the need to address the situation in line with the United Nations, UN, specification for 35 percent female presence in elective and appointive positions.
